The "Star" records the death of another of the fast diminishing band of pioneers or Wairoa in the person of John Alfred James. Deceased was born in Worcestershire and came out to New Zealand when only a lad of 16. He was well-known in the Hawke's Bay and Auckland provinces and had his share of the hardships which the settlers endured during the early colonisation of New Zealand. Mr. James settled in the Wairoa district over 40 years ago, and conducted business as a butcher in Wairoa, and also on the Waikaremoana road. Latterly deceased was almost a cripple from rheumatism and his death occurred after a long illness. He leaves the following family: Mrs. G. Black (Warea, Taranaki) Mrs. E. D. Oldham (Frasertown), Mrs. W. A. Neale (Wairoa), and Mr. C. James (Wairoa).
