EXONIAN'S DEATH.
Mr. E. F. Nicks, Member of the Old 1st R.V.
A lengthy association with the 1st R.V> was that of Mr. Edwin Francis Nicks, whose death took place yesterday at his residence, 23, Portland-street, Exeter, aged 79. Deceased was for many years on the printing staff of the "Western Times," and later on the "Express and Echo." Engaged on the former paper, which was then in Fore-street, Exeter, by Mr. George Latimer, at that time the Editor, he had interesting memories of his associates of that day. One of three brothers, he was an enthusiastic member of the 1st R. V., and never failed to attend the annual camp. Mr. Nicks, in his early days as a sergeant in that Corps, gave recruits their first drills. His service to the 1st R.V. was untiring and conscientious, and one of his proud possessions was a long service medal, bearing the insignia of Queen Victoria, and a cup from "C" Company, which he was awarded in 1892. The inscription reads: "Presented to Sergt. E. Nicks by the members of 'C' Company 1st R.V. as a mark of good fellowship and appreciation of his services as Hon. Secretary of the Company Shooting Committee. 8th March, 1893." There are three sons and two daughters. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the house at noon.
