        ATTEMPTED SUICIDE OF A PUBLICAN'S WIFE

        Great excitement was caused at Treherbert yesterday morning be the announcement that Mrs. Davies, of the Royal Exchange public-house, had attempted to destroy herself by taking poison. It seems that Mrs. Davies had lately experienced great trouble in consequence of her business being in confusion, and she had offered a composition to her creditors, which, after some delay, was accepted, but the amount she had still to pay was so large that the arrangement gave her but little relief. In this juncture a man named Davies, well-known at Treorki and Treherbert, and who had been in the habit of frequenting the Exchange, offered her marriage. She was at this time a widow, and named Mrs. Roberts. She accepted this offer, and they were married a short time ago. It appears, however, that the marriage has not proved a very happy one. It is stated that the husband well knew her circumstances, and that she concealed nothing from him. But quarrels were frequent, and on Wednesday evening a quarrel occurred between them of a serious nature. The husband, it seems, had poison, know as "Baker's compound," in the cellar, and about four o'clock yesterday morning Mrs. Davies left her bedroom, and descended to where the poison was kept. She soon re appeared in his bedroom, and told her husband she would soon be dead, that she had taken some of the poison in the cellar. Her husband made all haste to fetch medical aid, and Dr. Phillips, Treorki, was quickly on the scene. He found the poor woman in imminent danger. He administered an emetic immediately, and as soon as possible applied the stomach pump. She was in an extremely critical condition all day yesterday, and little hope of her recovery is entertained.
