        Death of Mr. Sweetland.

It is our painful task to announce the death of Mr. E. T. SWEETLAND, one of the proprietors of this paper, at the age of 34. After the contested election between Mr. Coleridge and Lord Courtenay in 1864, in which Mr. Sweetland took a prominent and most active part, the health of the lamented deceased became impaired. By a few weeks sojourn at an hydropathic establishment near Bath, however, he recruited his health, and for some time after that he was able to attend to business, and to discharge the duties of Secretary to the Liberal Registration Association, in which he took a great interest. Some months ago he was again attacked with illness, and it was then discovered, after a careful examination, that organic disease had set in, from which he could not recover. After lingering in great pain for a long period, Mr. Sweetland closed his mortal life in peace at three o'clock this morning. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn an irreparable loss. The deceased was an enthusiastic Radical, and as Secretary to the Liberal Association he rendered essential service to the cause. His zealous efforts in the political contests that have taken place in this city during the last few years, in some measure injured his health, it is feared, but he was never weary of doing all in his power to promote the principles and interests of the Liberal party. For his services to that party he was sometime ago presented with a handsome testimonial. The deceased has been connected with journalism for many years, having served his apprenticeship in the office of the Western Times, and he has been connected with the Devon Weekly Times ever since its establishment. With the writer of this notice Mr. Sweetland has been associated from boyhood. The dream of their early life he lived to see realized - viz: the establishment of an independent Liberal journal in this city - but he has been cut off far too soon to see accomplished all the political work his busy mind had anticipated. That busy mind is now at rest. Death has drawn the curtain between the invisible - where no party or personal conflicts are - and the visible, where the normal condition of things, it would seem, is war and not peace; but the memory of the life that has been closed, at so early an age, will be cherished by many an earnest Liberal politician, and by many a warm friend.
