Narrative

The transcription of Hugh Bolt's 1775 baptism record (on FamilySearch and Ancestry.com) gives a mother Jane Bolt but no father. There are no likely candidates for an unmarried Jane Bolt in the baptism registers for Morchard Bishop or the surrounding parishes - however there is a Jane Sowdon married to a John Bolt several years previously. Ancestry.com suggests (without sources) that John died 30 March 1775 in Morchard Bishop. If correct, this would explain why Hugh's baptism record has no father's name - as the father was deceased. Unfortunately the parish register book covering this period is missing from the Devon FHS website, but it is presumably at the Devon Archives and would show whether this death is correct or not.
