        DEATH OF AN OLD EXONIAN.

        Mr. W. J. Sweetland, of Southernhay, Exeter, died on Monday, after a long illness, at the age of 74. Mr. Sweetland had carried on business, with gardens at Whipton, for just 40 years. His wife and four of his children predeceased him, but he has left one son and seven daughters. In politics, Mr. Sweetland was a Conservative, but he never took a very active part in public affairs. He was a relative of the late Mr. E. J. Sweetland, of the firm of Tozer, Sweetland, and Brodie, newspaper proprietors, of Exeter.

        [EXETER DAY BY DAY]

        Yesterday afternoon the funeral of the late Mr. W. J. Sweetland, market gardener, of Southernhay, Exeter, took place at the Higher Cemetery. The principal mourners were: Mr. W. E. Sweetland (son), Mrs Nicks, Miss H. Sweetland, Mrs. Norcombe, Miss J. Sweetland, Mrs. Slader, Miss K. Sweetland, and Mrs. F. Riden (daughters), Mr. Slader (son-in-law), Miss M. A. Sweetland (sister), Mrs W. E. Sweetland (daughter-in-law), Mr. J. Sweetland (cousin), Mr. and Mrs. Spratt (cousins), Miss Nicks (granddaughter), Messrs. W. Charley, Snell, and Sanders. The body was enclosed in an inner shell, and the outer coffin was of polished elm, with brass mountings. There were numerous floral tributes from relatives and friends.

        LATE MR. P. SLADER

        Burial of a Well-Known Citizen at Exeter

        Amid manifestations of regret, the funeral of Mr. Peter Slader, of Heasley House, Archibald-road, the Barnfield, Exeter, took place at Exeter yesterday. Deceased was head of the business of P. Slader and Son, fruit merchants of Southernhay, but retired from active business a short time ago and accepted a seat on the Board of Guardians. At the municipal election on Thursday last he was successful in winning a seat on the Council by 44 votes. Mr. Slader was a prominent Wesleyan, and the first portion of the funeral service took part in Southernhay Wesleyan Church, the interment being at the Higher Cemetery.

        The officiating clergymen were Rev. A. J. D. Llewellyn, pastor of Southernhay, Rev. P. R. Passmore, Topsham, and Rev. A. E. Butler (Superintendant of the Circuit). The service was choral, Mr. W. T. Taylor presiding at the organ. As the cortege entered the Church he played appropriate music. The hymns sung were "Happy the soul to Jesus joined," and "How bright these glorious spirits shine." As the funeral procession left the church, "O rest in the Lord" was impressively rendered.

        The coffin was of unpolished English oak with brass fittings and the inscription on the breastplate read "Peter Slader, fell asleep November 5th, 1923, aged 63 years."

        The principal mourners were Mrs. P. Slader (widow); Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Slader (son and daughter-in-law); Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Bragg (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. and Mrs. F. Anstey (brother-in-law and sister); Mr. and Mrs. R. Copener (brother-in-law and sister); Miss Larcombe (friend); Mr. Riden (brother-in-law); Mrs. Bragg, senior, and the employees, Messrs. E. Heath, W. Allen, A. Davy and Martin.

        There was a large and representative gathering at the Church. Among those present were his Worship the Mayor (Mr. P. F. Roswell), Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Brock, the following members of the Exeter Board of Guardians, Messrs. W. Stoneman, Gillingham, E. Selway, P. Kelland, J. R. Nethercott, J. W. Tallman, Dudley Marsh (Governor), and A. Snell (Clerk), and Miss Townsend, the following members of the O.B.S.A., Messrs. Brignal, W. T. Bowie, Gibb, Boffett, Chick, Pearse, W. J.         EXETER WEDDING

        Mr. F. C. Bragg, M.C., M.M., and Miss Lilian Slader

        The wedding of Miss Lillian Slader, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. Slader, Heasley House, Archibald-road, to Mr. Fred C. Bragg, M.C., M.M., only son of Mrs. Bragg of 9, Powderham-crescent, was solemnised at the Southernhay Wesleyan Church, Exeter, yesterday. There was a numerous congregation for the ceremony, in which much interest was felt, the families of both bride and bridegroom being connected with the Church, of which Mr. Slader is a trustee and was lately for many years Society Steward. The bridegroom has been Hon. Secretary of the Southernhay O.B.S.A., and the bride, who is well-known in local musical circles, a member of the choir, and teacher for several years in the Sunday School. The service was choral, the hymns rendered by the choir being "The Voice that breathed o'er Eden," and "O, Perfect Love." Rev. A. J. D. Llewellyn B.D. (Mayor's Chaplain) performed the ceremony, assisted by Rev. P. Passmore, of Topsham. Mr. W. Slader (brother of the bride) was at the organ, and played the Bride's March from "Lohengrin" on the arrival of the wedding party, and Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" during the signing of the register.

        The Sheriff of Exeter (Mr. Arthur Brock), President of the Southernhay O.B.S.A., lent his car to convey the bride to and from the church. Miss Slader who was given away by her father, was daintily gowned in ivory satin charmeuse, with loose georgette sleeves, and the under-bodice and cascaded skirt panels of ivory georgette, embroidered with porcelain beads. Her tulle veil was very becomingly arranged in cap-fashion, bordered with a wreath of orange blossoms and ruches run with floss silk, over her fair hair, and she carried a bouquet of pink and white Nephitos roses. The bridesmaids were Miss Muriel Riden and Miss Valerie Smale (cousins of the bride) and Miss Phyllis Toy. Little Miss Smale was in a white lace frock, with a petal tunic of pale pink crepe de chine sashed with narrow rosetted ribbons and wore a pink crepe de chine cap, with clusters of blue forget-me-nots in the plaited bandeau edging it. The elder girls wore white silk frocks, with frilled hems and touches of pink silk embroidery, and white net caps wreathed with silver leaves. All three carried posies of pink tulips and white roses, and wore gold pendants, the gifts of the bridegroom. Mr. W. Parish performed the duties of "best man."

        Mrs. Slader (mother of the bride) wore a gown of mole satin mousseline, with panels embroidered in blue and bronze beads, and a satin hat to match wreathed with blue and mauve foliage. A gown of black striped silk atore, embroidered with steel beads and a black tagel hat with glycerine ospreys at the side, were worn by the bridegroom's mother Mrs. Bragg.

        After the reception, held at Heasley House, Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Bragg left for London for the honeymoon, the bride travelling in a nigger brown tailor-made costume, worn with a Glenster hat in tissue petals to match, and a mole fox stole.

        The wedding presents, which numbered over a hundred, included an oak clock, presented to the bridegroom by the President and members of the Southernhay O.B.S.A. and to the bride cut-glass tumblers and water jug from the Southernhay Wesleyan Church choir, and a silver-mounted triple lunch dish from the Superintendent and teachers of the Sunday School. The bridegroom's present to the bride was a silver chain bag, and the bride's to the bridegroom an oak bureau.

         The funeral of Mr. W. J. Sweetland, of Southernhay Gardens, Exeter, took place yesterday afternoon at the Higher Cemetery, in the presence of several sorrowing friends. The funeral cortege left the house at 4 o'clock, and on arriving at the cemetery was met by the Rev. Lucas, who officiated at the church and the graveside. The mourners were:- Mr W E Sweetland and Mrs Nicks, Miss H Sweetland and Mrs Norcombe, Miss J Sweetland and Mrs Slader, Miss K Sweetland and Mrs F Riden (children); Mr Slader (son-in-law), Miss M A Sweetland (sister), Mr Charley, Mrs W E Sweetland, Mr J Sweetland (cousin), Mrs Nicks, Mr Spratt, and Mrs Spratt (niece), Mr Snell, Miss Coates, and Mr Riden. The coffin, which was of polished English elm, the shell being upholstered with satin and lambswool, and massive brass furniture, bore the following inscription:- "William John Sweetland, died September 19th, 1904, aged 74 years." Wreaths and crosses were sent by:- Sorrowing family and sister; Bill and Gertrude; Gertie, Ted, Edie, Walt and Ernie; Willie, Mabel, Ethel and Reg; Lily and Willie; Miss Snell, Pollie Cole, Mrs. M.
