        On the 11th instant, at Bassalleg Vicarage, in this county, aged 77 years, Mr. James Prees, son of the late Mr. Lewis Prees, for many years Apparitor of Llandaff Court. The deceased was gardener to the Rev. Chancellor Williams, and had been a faithful servant in the family for 35 years.

        The top layer of the front of the stone is eroded away, and much of the text is difficult or impossible to make out. This is what I was able to read when I visited in May 2023:

        The middle section was in a different style of text and looked to be a poem or epitaph; the bottom section is obviously referring to James being the gardener to the Rev Chancellor Williams.
