Narrative

John (and indeed other family members) changed the spelling of the surname from Prees to Preece around the time of his second marriage. In this time period we would imagine this to be a new vicar using a different spelling, and that the family were illiterate and didn't know any better - but John was a clerk at the cathedral, so must have been literate. Presumably it was therefore an intentional change for whatever reason.
