        DEATH OF M. HOWARD

There died at an early hour this morning at his home in Empire, Matthew Howard. Deceased had reached the ripe age of eighty-three years, one month and seven days. He had been practically an invalid for the past twenty years.

Matthew Howard was a native of England and was among the early settlers of Virginia City, later being employed at Brunswick by Bob Logan, as well as having worked at most of the other mills on the river.

There are left to mourn the loss of this estimable old pioneer Mrs. J. Smith of Empire, Mrs. E. Pitman of Nova Scotia, Mrs. C. C. Small of Clio. California, all daughters. The three sons, George and Frank of Empire, and Richard of Reno, together with twenty-one grand children and great grand children.

Arrangements for the funeral have as yet not been completed and will be announced later.
