        DEATH OF MR. RONALD DEACON.

        Tragic Sequel to a Chill.

We deeply regret to record the death of Mr. Joseph Ronald Deacon, the only son of Councillor and Mrs. J. R. Deacon, of St. Chad's Road, Lichfield, which took place with tragic suddenness at Blackwood Road, Streetly, on Tuesday morning. Mr. Deacon, who was only 27 years of age, caught a chill during the week-end, and took to his bed on Monday. The seriousness of his illness was not then apparent, but he died in the early hours of the following morning. Mr. Frank Cooper conducted an enquiry on Wednesday and recorded a verdict of death from natural causes. It was stated by Dr. McNab that after a post-mortem examination he found the cause of death to have been acute pneumonia.

Mr. Deacon was an old Lichfield Grammar School boy, and completed his education at Trent College. He then became an articled pupil with Messrs. Jefferies and Shipley, architects, of Walsall, and later joined his father in the firm of Messrs. J. R. Deacon and Son.

The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. to-day (Friday) at St. Chad's Church, Lichfield.

        [GREAT HAYWOOD]

Fatal Accident to a Child. - A verdict of accidental death was returned at an inquest held by Mr. S. W. Morgan at the Staffordshire General Infirmary, on Thursday, relative to the death of Charles Herbert Smith, the four-year-old son of Charles Smith, milk retailer, of Little Tixall. The evidence showed that on Saturday morning deceased was seen to run across the Stone Road at Great Haywood and fall in front of a motor-car. After medical treatment at home the child was removed to the Infirmary, where an operation was performed in the hope of saving its life, but death ensued from hemorrhage, caused by a fracture of the skull. Evidence was given that the car, which was driven by Joseph Ronald Deacon, of Lichfield, was proceeding at a moderate pace and on its proper side, and that the driver, who sounded the horn, had no chance of avoiding the accident. - The jury expressed the opinion that no blame whatever attached to the driver of the car.
